The Story Behind The Artist
It's hard to believe it was that many years ago, but I started out watching my brothers and sisters perform
in the 1960's for years in the bands that formed my earliest exposure to live concerts and music writing. I joined a local
R&B - Funk band in my neighborhood as the lead keyboard player. Keyboards became my main instrument although I love to play bass guitar as well.
So I played a few gigs in Junior High School, graduated from High School went onto College and the Air force.
Not too surprisingly my passion for music followed me. I ended up playing organ for a choir at the Air Base I was assigned to
overseas. I bought new gear, built a small recording studio in my apartmeny and formed a band called "Onyx". We performed on the
Air Base at the Officer's Club and NCO's Clubs and some of us even had the fortune of recording background vocals on a track for Miguel Bose on
his 1983 Fuego album.
Over the years I joined other bands, collaborated with other artists internationally and slowly started to build a library of original music.
I was writing the lyrics, composing the music, singing the vocal tracks, using my favorite "keys"... the Fender Rhodes to lay down those sultry smooth chords
and a Korg workstation to lay down the rhythm sections and digital instrument tracks. Over the years the technology and tools available to create, record and master
music have evolved. Yet, all the recording tools in the world won't matter if there's no authentic creativity, no experiences to write about and no muse to inspire you.
My passion for music has never faded. I've just evolved over the years.
I have rarely just sat down at my keyboard or workstation or carved out time in the studio with the
intention of writing a song off the top of my head. As if my creativity in song writing could be scheduled
to a certain date, time and place. No! That works for some, but for me, complete songs, lyrics, tempo, melody
and mood are literally dropped into my spirit. I typically rush to write the lyrics down so I don't forget
them or sing into the microphone app on my phone. Back in the day I'd record straight into a cassette tape recorder and then work the chords,
beat, instrumentation, vocals, etc. out on my Teac multitrack recorder. Bouncing tracks, multi-tracking and using every tool available to get
the sound just right. Today I have more production tools on my laptop than I had inside all the 19" racks of my home recording studio back in the day.
I use AI as a resource within my musical toolbox along with other digital mastering tools. Yet, all the inspiration, creativity and heart that I pour into every song starts within me.
